New Quepem post office 'power'less

QUEPEM: The post office in town shifted to a new location on Tuesday, but many citizens had to go back disappointed, as no transactions were possible including the payment of telephone bills due to the lack of power supply at the new premises.

The postal authorities had pasted a notice on the wall of the single-room post office building, behind the deputy collector's office, stating that it would be shifted to Angelica Arcade temporarily to allow repairs for two months from March 17 onwards.

Citizens in the town and surrounding areas were left in a lurch as the new office, barely 100m from the old premises, could not provide services other than issuing of stamps, as computers could not be operated due to the lack of power.

Assistant post master at Quepem post office was not in the office as she has been sent for training. Assistant superintendent of post office, Mapusa, Deepak Bhoval said that the problem will be sorted out within an hour. He also said that the postal inspector from Ponda sub-division is transfering the equipment.

But till late evening no power connection was provided.

A junior engineer at the electricity department, Quepem, said that he has not received any application for the new connection for the post office. And without any approval and load testing certificate theycan't give any connection to any premises.

Citizens were upset that postal authorities had shifted the office without making arrangements at the new premises although they were fully aware of the same and had three days holidays to complete the task.
